Alanna Bowen
BSpHSc, MSLP, MCaSC, MSPA-CPSP
Alanna is an experienced Speech Pathologist dedicated to providing exceptional, compassionate care for people with voice, swallowing, and airway disorders. Her practice is guided by a commitment to clinical excellence, evidence-based care, and improving quality of life for the individuals and families she supports.
Alanna completed a Master of Speech and Language Pathology at Macquarie University in 2008. Since graduating, she has worked extensively within the public health system in South East Melbourne, supporting patients and families across the continuum of care including intensive care, acute, rehabilitation, palliative care, and outpatient services. This broad experience has given her a strong understanding of patient flow throughout the healthcare system and the complex needs individuals may face during recovery and long-term management.
She has extensive experience in the assessment and management of swallowing, speech, and voice disorders across a wide range of diagnoses. Alanna has particular interest in supporting people with complex airway and swallowing needs, developing advanced clinical skills in altered airway management (laryngectomy and tracheostomy), and instrumental swallow assessment (videofluoroscopy and FEES).
Alongside her clinical work, Alanna is passionate about advancing the profession through education and mentorship. She has significant experience providing education and training to speech pathology students as well as nursing, medical, and allied health colleagues, and is committed to supporting clinicians through professional education and clinical supervision.
Alanna strongly believes in person-centred care, working collaboratively with each individual to develop management plans that are meaningful and practical in everyday life. She integrates the latest research into her practice and regularly uses patient-reported outcome measures to better understand how communication, swallowing, or airway difficulties impact a person’s daily life.
To further deepen her expertise in oncology-related care, Alanna completed a Master of Cancer Sciences at the University of Melbourne in 2022.
Through her work, Alanna strives to restore communication, support safe swallowing, and empower both patients and clinicians to achieve the best possible outcomes.
